Archbishop Etienne among Pope’s appointees for Synod of Bishops in October

Picture
Pope Francis has appointed 363 Cardinals, Bishops (including our very own Archbishop Paul D. Etienne of Seattle), Priests, Religious and Lay men and women to attend the Synod meeting this October. As a first in the history of the synod, there is more than a quarter of the voting members who are not bishops and includes 54 women voting members. The Synod at MQP

February 2, 2023

Dear Friends,

Back in the fall of 2021, the worldwide Church began an effort called the Synod on Synodality, for becoming more and more a listening Church that accompanies one another in the faith. This multi-year effort has several stages, beginning at the parish level during the first part of 2022. Millions of people throughout the world have participated, including many of you here at MQP. I’m grateful to Jim Chambers for having accepted my invitation to lead MQP’s participation in the Synod, all those who helped Jim, and those who participated in listening sessions. Please read Jim’s summary letter to the parish, and the MQP Synod report below.

As Jim has written, throughout 2022, the Synod moved from the parish level to the archdiocese level, to the national level. It is currently at the continental level during this first part of 2023, with future worldwide gatherings coming up in the latter parts of 2023 and 2024.  You can find more information at these links:

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us!

Hopes for the Synod

Watch Archbishop Etienne and others explain how local parishes, ministries, and lay people will host listening sessions to prayerfully read the signs of the times, interpret them in the light of the Gospel, and then discern how the Holy Spirit is calling the Body of Christ to accomplish our mission here and now.

Watch the video of the Mass at St. James Cathedral for the Opening of the Synodal Process in the Archdiocese of Seattle! It was a true experience of the Holy Spirit’s presence and our being part of the Universal Church. If you wish, you may simply read Archbishop Ettiene's homily here.
